Accountant General, Chhattisgarh functions under the Comptroller & Auditor General of India (C&AG) who is the Head of the Indian Audit & Accounts Department. The Comptroller & Auditor General of India is a Constitutional Authority appointed by the warrant of the President of India. His functions derived mainly from the provisions of Article-149 to 151 of the Constitution of India.

The state of Chhattisgarh came into existence from 1st November 2000 after the re-organization of Madhya Pradesh State. The Office of the Accountant General, Chhattisgarh was established at Raipur from 6th August 2001 and thereafter commenced its activities from rented premises at Fafadih for computerized compilation of State Government Accounts (known as VLC— Voucher Level Compilation). Work of General Provident Fund, Pension Group & Audit wing commenced at Pandri, w.e.f August 2002 and April 2003 respectively.

The new office building is being constructed at Zero Point, Baloda Bazar Road, Near Vidhan Sabha.
